Alright, a couple of weeks or so into Illustrator. After feeling good about using the pen tool to draw some shapes, I now used the pathfinder shape to manipulate all of my shapes at the same time. This tool can unite or divide your objects. There are several modes, such as subtract, intersect, overlap, divide, exclude, and more. You can also choose of how your shapes would interact with each other by compound paths or compound shapes. Compound shapes combines many objects and tells how you want your object to interact with the other, while compound path lets you cut a hole in another object. I first founded this while doing my tutorial on making a Hulk Smash tutorial. In order to find the tool, you first go to "Window", then to "Pathfinder". There's no right or wrong on how you make your shapes at all. Your shape results depend on your creativity and method. That's why this is one of my another favorite tool to discuss about.
